Preface
This is a complicated book that addresses a complex and con-
troversial topic. With “populist and Islamist movements” we
refer to a broad spectrum of contemporary movements and
tendencies that may be loosely dubbed as “the Right.The
Right, in the sense we use that concept, in this book can be
both religious and political—and is predominantly a mixture
of both. We address the question at hand from different per-
spectives, reflecting the distinct environments in which we
live, teach, and interact.
Paul Cliteur teaches in the Netherlands and lectures and
travels widely throughout Europe; he has, therefore, a very
European focus on the questions addressed in this book. In
his examination of the rise of these movements, Professor Cli-
teur focuses on the impact-consequences of Islamism/Jihad-
ism as a direct contributor to significant changes in European
culture-society-politics-law.
Amos Guiora splits his time between the United States and
Israel; his writings focus, primarily, on those two countries.
In his examination, Professor Guiora focuses on language-
rhetoric-racism, particularly relevant to a contemporary
examination of U.S. and Israeli domestic politics.
We think both manifestations of the Right are intercon-
nected. Islamism, or Jihadism, fissures Western societies; and
right-wing populist groups and parties react to that challenge.
Our distinct backgrounds, life experiences, and aca-
demic and cultural settings lend themselves to addressing the
rise of right-wing populism and Islamism through different
perspectives. That does not mean this work is two separate
