  • The Inter-American Court recognized "the undeniable relationship between the protection of the environment and the realization of other human rights"

    For the first time, the Inter-American Court developed the right to a healthy environment. In the inter-American sphere, it is regulated, both by the provisions of Article 11 of the Protocol of San Salvador, and by Article 26 of the American Convention, which contains economic, social and cultural rights. Likewise, the Court highlighted the relationship of interdependence and indivisibility that exists between human rights, the environment and sustainable development. See Article.

    On January 31, the Inter-American Court held the opening ceremony of the 2018 Inter-American Judicial Year at its headquarters in San José, Costa Rica.   • IACHR completes work visit to El Salvador

    The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) made a working visit to El Salvador from November 20 to 22, 2017. The purpose of the visit was to monitor the human rights situation in El Salvador and, in particular, the situation of human rights of women and girls. The delegation was composed of the Commissioner in her capacity as Rapporteur of the IACHR for the Rights of Women and as Country Rapporteur, as well as specialists from the Executive Secretary of the IACHR.     The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) expresses its deep concern over the decision of the Peruvian government to grant a humanitarian pardon to the former president of Peru, Alberto Fujimori, sentenced to 25 years in prison for serious violations of human rights. The Inter-American Court and the IACHR have ruled on several alarming cases of human rights violations in which Alberto Fujimori was involved as a mediator, including the massacre of fifteen people in Barrios Altos and the forced disappearance and execution of ten students of the University La Cantuta.
