    On July 24 and 25, the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (CIDH) held the First Round-table on the Implementation of Public Policies on Human Rights with the Dominican State. As part of this Round-table, a working meeting took place between representatives of the State and civil society on migration, women's rights, gender equality and discrimination and nationality.     The Office of the Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Expression of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) expresses its grave concern over the criminal conviction, followed by imprisonment, handed down in Cuba against the Doctor of Biological Sciences, Ariel Ruiz Urquiola, for the crime of contempt, which follows the conviction of Eduardo Cardet Concepción, coordinator of the Christian Liberation Movement (MCL), who has been in prison for over a year.     The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) denounces the deterioration, deepening and diversification of the repression in Nicaragua in the last week. In the second week of the technical team of the Special Monitoring Mechanism for Nicaragua (MESENI)'s work, which began in Managua on June 24, 2018, the IACHR observed new forms of repression on the ground against the participants in the protests and opposition to the government and a particular impact on children and adolescents.See Article.

  • Office of the Special Rapporteur condemns the murder of another journalist in Mexico and urges an investigation into the relationship with his journalistic activity.

    The Office of the Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Expression of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) condemns the murder of journalist José Guadalupe Chan Dzib, which occurred on June 29 in Felipe Carrillo Puerto, in the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico, and urges the Mexican State to investigate the case with due diligence and clarify its possible relationship with journalism.   • IACHR Dismayed by the Continuing Deaths of Adolescents in Detention Centers in Brazil

    The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) expresses its deep concern about the continuing acts of violence and death in socio-educational centers for adolescents in the criminal law system in Brazil. The information received indicates that in less than a month at least 10 adolescents have lost their lives in a center in the state of Goiás and one teenager in the state of Ceará. This is in addition to other similar events that have occurred in the first months of this year. The IACHR reiterates its concern over this situation and calls on the Brazilian State to implement the recommendations issued during its visit in November 2017, during which it inspected the operation of SINASE and pointed out serious structural shortcomings.   • The right to health of an older adult was violated by Chile

    The Inter-American Court of Human Rights issued a Judgment declaring, unanimously, the international responsibility of the Chilean State for not guaranteeing Mr. Vinicio Antonio Poblete Vilches his right to health (article 26), without discrimination, through basic and urgent necessary services in relation to his special situation of vulnerability as an elderly person, which led to his death. It also stated that the State violated the rights to life and personal integrity, to his detriment, as well as the right to obtain informed consent and access to health information, to the detriment of Mr. Poblete and his family members, as well as the right to access to justice and personal integrity, to the detriment of their families, as determined in its Judgment delivered on March 8, 2018.     The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) expresses its deep concern about the continuation of aggrevated violence in Nicaragua, which has already claimed the lives of 143 people and constitutes a serious human rights crisis that must be addressed by the Nicaraguan State with the utmost urgency. Likewise, the IACHR strongly condemns the exacerbation of the excessive use of state force and the continuity of attacks by para-political actors and armed third parties, which the State has the obligation to dismantle.   • IACHR announces the creation of an Interdisciplinary Group of Independent Experts to assist in the investigation of recent acts of violence in Nicaragua.
