This book was a true group effort that involved the contributions of many people
across many continents. It was conceived—without our knowing it—out of a
2002 Forum on Franchising Program in Phoenix, Arizona, entitled “Interna-
tional Franchise Disclosure Laws” during the tenure of then-chair Susan
Grueneberg, and it was born through the active encouragement and vision of
her successor, chair Steve Goldman. Subsequent Forum chairs have also all
been highly supportive.
We wish to first thank each of the country authors for their extraordinary
efforts and diligence in preparing their chapters and overcoming the challenges
inherent in international communication and of a demanding publication schedule.
Each country author is identified at the start of the author’s respective country
chapter, with his or her biographical information at the end of the chapter.
We would next like to thank all of the Steering Committee members of the
ABA Forum on Franchising’s International Division who willingly assisted as a
“regional editors” on the first edition of the book to work with the country authors
and to edit their work: Stephen Giles, Lou Jones, Jane LaFranchi, Babette
Marzheuser-Wood, Larry Weinberg, and Carl Zwisler. The regional editors for
this edition of this book are also identified with the author biographical informa-
tion at the end of each of the country chapters for which they had responsibility.
John Baer and Kim McCullough, our original liaisons from the Forum’s
Publications Committee, deserve a special word of thanks for their valuable
guidance, constant attention, and editing advice in publication of the first edi-
tion of this book. Their successors from the Publications Committee continued
that valuable support on this new edition and on prior supplements. In addition,
we would like to thank our respective firms and several sets of associates and
legal assistants for their many contributions to this publication, notably Diana
Vilmenay, Keri McWilliams, and Tammy Mitchell for this second edition (and
Shannon Haaf and Emily Chang of Nixon Peabody LLP and Katherine McGowan
and Josh Ridout of Paul Hastings LLP, for the first edition).
Importantly, each of us would like to thank our families. In Andrew’s case,
that means thanking my wife, Linda (a constant source of wise advice), and my
three sons for their understanding that Dad was always at work on “the book.”
For Mike, that means expressing appreciation for my wife, Wendy, and our two
daughters, who have grown up hearing about “the book.” Finally, we would
like to thank the Forum on Franchising for giving us the opportunity and pro-
viding its support in bringing this book to the light of day, and for letting us
show that, while the world is indeed flat as Tom Friedman has told us, it does
have more than a few hills, valleys, and bumps in the road.
