Tráfico de mujeres hacia Japón: la realidad del problema, expuesta públicamente en un simposio

TOKYO - De acuerdo con las estimaciones existentes, decenas de miles de mujeres son introducidas ilegalmente en Japón cada año. ¿Cómo puede contrarrestarse este tráfico? Fomentar el conocimiento del problema constituyó el objetivo de un simposio celebrado el 22 de enero por la Oficina de Correspondencia de la OIT en Tokyo y la Asia Foundation, con la colaboración de la Red de Organizaciones de la Sociedad Civil de Japón.
En este foro se presentaron diversas perspectivas acerca del tráfico de personas. Las ONG que asisten a las víctimas de esta práctica brindaron sus opiniones, al igual que diversos organismos encargados de velar por el cumplimiento de la ley, la comunidad diplomática y los responsables de la formulación de políticas. Asimismo, una colombiana de 23 años de edad ofreció su propio relato de sus dos años de cautiverio en un burdel de Japón como prostituta sometida a condiciones de esclavitud.
'El público en general no ve a las mujeres como víctimas', señaló Masahiro Suga, Asesor Principal de asuntos sociales del ministerio de Asuntos Exteriores de Japón, citado en el periódico Herald/Asahi tras el simposio. Por el contrario, creen que se trata de 'mujeres que se iniciaron en la profesión a sabiendas y se quejan de un trato poco favorable. Yo solía pensar lo mismo, pero, después del simposio, comprendí que la situación es totalmente diferente y que supone un problema más grave'.
Los expertos participantes señalaron ante una audiencia de unos 300 asistentes que el gobierno japonés debe adoptar lo que definieron como una postura de mayor firmeza respecto a las prácticas de tráfico y contrabando de personas. Afirmaron que un gran número de mujeres de diversos países de Asia, América Latina y otras regiones del mundo llegan a Japón en respuesta a las promesas de un buen empleo. Una vez en el país, sus 'empleadores' y las bandas de delincuentes convierten a sus víctimas en virtuales prisioneras. Muchas de estas mujeres deben hacer frente a deudas ilícitas, por lo que son obligadas a participar en la industria del sexo.
Los ponentes instaron además al gobierno a ratificar el Protocolo para Prevenir, Suprimir y Castigar el Tráfico de Personas, especialmente Mujeres y Niños, que complementa la Convención de las Naciones Unidas contra el Crimen Organizado Transnacional, 2000.
