El 27 de abril se celebrÛ en la sede de la OIT un acto en memoria de los trabajadores muertos y heridos. Se lanzÛ un nuevo sÌmbolo de la seguridad en el trabajo: una cinta de color amarillo y negro. El Director General, Juan Somavia, acompaÒado por Manuel SimÛn Velasco, Director de la Oficina de la OIT de Actividades para los Trabajadores (ACTRAV), Philippe Petit, embajador de Francia, Jean-FranÁois Retournard, Director de la Oficina de la OIT de Actividades para los Empleadores, Dan Cunniah, Secretario del Grupo de los Trabajadores de la OIT, Adwoa Sakyi, de la UniÛn General de Trabajadores AgrÌcolas (Ghana), Fiona Murie, Directora de Salud, Seguridad y Medio Ambiente de la FederaciÛn Internacional de Trabajadores de la ConstrucciÛn y la Madera (IFBWW), y Jukka Takala, Director del Programa InFocus de la OIT sobre Trabajo Seguro, encendiÛ un cirio que se mantuvo asÌ durante toda la ceremonia en memoria de los trabajadores que mueren, resultan heridos o enferman a consecuencia de formas de producciÛn no sostenibles.
DespuÈs de encender el cirio simbÛlico, el Sr. Somavia declarÛ: "Pueden contar con mi apoyo para lograr que este DÌa Conmemorativo, el 28 de abril, sea proclamado DÌa Internacional de las Naciones Unidas en Memoria de los Trabajadores Muertos y Heridos. Esto permitir· a la comunidad internacional unirse a las organizaciones sindicales para honrar la memoria de estos trabajadores que perdieron la vida, sufrieron lesiones o enfermaron mientras trabajaban para crear riqueza".
El acto se centrÛ en dos sectores peligrosos: la agricultura, con 170.000 muertes al aÒo a consecuencia del uso de plaguicidas y maquinaria peligrosa, y la construcciÛn, donde se pierden m·s de 100.000 vidas, en su mayor parte a consecuencia del contacto frecuente con el amianto. TambiÈn se recordÛ a los miembros del ACNUR que murieron en Timor Oriental el aÒo pasado, asÌ como a otros funcionarios de las Naciones Unidas, incluidos los miembros de las fuerzas de pacificaciÛn de las Naciones Unidas que murieron o fueron heridos en acto de servicio.
"El trabajo se ha hecho m·s peligroso que hace una dÈcada a consecuencia de diversos factores, entre ellos la falta de prevenciÛn, equipos deficientes, las pr·cticas de producciÛn peligrosas y, a veces, la falta de voluntad polÌtica de los gobiernos, adem·s del mal cumplimiento de las normas por parte de los empleados, a quienes hay que culpar por negligencia", afirmÛ Manuel SimÛn Velasco.
