Abstract
The main aim of this study aim was to verify some of the basic assumptions of moral
foundations theory especially, the hypothesis that differences in political attitudes and
political disagreement may, in part, reflect difference in moral foundations. A random sample
of 1105 politically affiliated and non-affiliated students was selected from three universities
in the Gaza Strip, including Al-Azhar University, Islamic University and Al-Aqsa University. The
results of the study revealed that there was a significant inverse correlation between political
behavior and all the dimensions of MFQ except for Ingroup Loyalty which showed a positive
correlation. The correlations of all the dimensions of the MFQ with all the dimensions of the
ACT scale were statistically significant, except for Ingroup/Loyalty, which showed an inverse
correlation. Moreover, the study showed that political behavior was predicted by some of
the moral foundations. Most moral foundations predicted the total ACT score and all its
three dimensions. Significant differences between affiliated and non-affiliated students on
moral foundations were revealed in favor of non-affiliated students. There were no significant
differences between affiliated and non-affiliated students regarding the three components of
authoritarianism. Finally, the study revealed that there were significant differences in political
behavior and authoritarianism between members affiliated with Fatah and those members
affiliated with Hamas in favor of members of Hamas. There were no significant differences
between members affiliated with Fatah and members affiliated with Hamas regarding moral
foundations.
Keywords: moral foundations, authoritarianism, authoritarian submission, authoritarian aggression,
conventionalism, political behavior, political affiliation, Fatah, Hamas
