Archeology and its role in perpetuating Biblical
history in Jerusalem: “The City of David” as a case
study

Abstract
This article addresses the ideological deployment of archaeology by
the Israeli establishment that aims to perpetuate Biblical history in
Jerusalem. It examines the so-called “City of David” in the Silwan
area as a case study that demonstrates the way this establishment
manipulates geography and archaeology to construct a fabricated
history of the place and its surroundings. In the late 1960’s and 1970’s,
and within a short period of time after the occupation of Jerusalem
in 1967, the Israeli Antiquities Authority continued the excavation
work that was begun in the nineteenth Century by excavating in the
southern and eastern southern area of Al-Aqsa Mosque and Silwan.
This work intensied in the early 1990’s because of the important
role these excavations play in the construction and consolidation
of the religious-national identity in Israel as well as the role of the
historical and archeological organizations that perpetuate biblical
toponymy and narratives that will complete the Judaization of the
city and repackage it within a biblical cover.
