World Hunger Media Awards presented

Media support is essential "if the goal of a hunger-free world by the end of this century is to be attained", Secretary-General Javier Perez de Cuellar said on 26 November 1985 at the World Hunger Media Awards ceremony at United Nations Headquarters.

Cash prizes worth $100,000 were presented at the ceremony to the 1985 award winners for their efforts "in the constant fight to end hunger" by American singer Kenny Rogers and his wife, Marianne, who established the awards four years ago. Former newscaster Walter Cronkite hosted the award ceremony.

Irish rock star Bob Geldof, who spearheaded the "Band Aid" and "Live Aid" relief efforts received a Special Achievement award. Other recipients included: James P. Gannon and others (Des Moines Register) and David Willis (Christian Science Monitor), best newspaper coverage; Mohamed Amin (Visnews), Michael Buerk (BBC and NBC) and Marcia Pons, Bob Salter and James McEnelly (KENS-TV), best television coverage; Stan Grossfeld (Boston Globe), best photo journalism; Daniel Zwerdling and John McChesney (National Public Radio), best radio coverage; and Lloyd Timberlake for "Africa in Crisis", best book.
