Proudly displaying a poster-sized proclamation, New York City Mayor David N. Dinkins declared 14 September 1992 as Boutros Boutros-Ghali Day, an unprecedented one-time holiday in honour of the sixth UN Secretary-General. "Like all New Yorkers, I am terribly proud that the world's greatest hope for peace makes its home in our city", said Mayor Dinkins, after making the presentation to Mr. Boutros-Ghali during a reception at Gracie Mansion to mark the occasion.

"Your presence lends us great prestige - your everyday activities are a cornerstone of our economy - and you enrich our cultural life immeasurably", he said, adding that the City was hard at work on plans to help celebrate in 1995 the fiftieth anniversary of the UN.
