EDITORIAL
Special issue: Macro and micro perspectives on
location, innovation, trade, migration and regional
growth
This volume includes a selection of the papers presented at the final conference of ISCH COST Action
IS1104 The EU in the new complex geography of economic systems: models, tools and policy evalu-
ation, a research network funded by the European Union, that took place at Heraklion, Crete (Greece)
on 2527 May, 2016. The objective of the Action has been to address issues related to the uneven dis-
tribution of economic activity within the EU by developing new techniques suitable for the analysis of
large economic systems and then applying them to the study of a variety of social and economic issues.
In particular, research has targeted three broad areas where improved techniques for policy evaluation
can have a significant impact on the welfare of EU citizens: research on economic geography
addressed problems related to the patterns of inter-regional and international trade, the institutions and
markets research group focused on issues related to labor markets (migration) and financial market
(systemic risk), while the social and industrial interactions research group examined issues ranging
from network security to industrial competitiveness.
The first two papers on this issue have been contributed by the two keynote speakers of the confer-
ence: Professor Masahisa Fujita from the University of Kyoto who has made seminal contributions in
the economics of knowledge creation and economic geography and Professor Takatoshi Tabuchi who
has made significant contributions in economic geography and industrial organization. Among the
other papers presented at the conference and submitted for potential publication in this issue we first
selected those with subjects that fit with the general objectives of this journal and then we accepted for
publication those that have successfully gone through a peer-review process.
