Palestinian Rights Committee elects officers, approves work programme

The Committee on the Exercise ofthe Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People has elected officers and approved its programme of work for 1987

On 12 January, Massamba Sarre(Senegal) was unanimously re-elected Chairman for a seventh one-year term. Oscar Oramas-Oliva (Cuba) and George Agius (Malta) were re-elected Vice-Chairman and Rapporteur, respectively. The Committee's Working Group was re-established under the chairmanship of the Permanent Representative of Malta, George Agius.

Secretary-General Javier Perez deCuellar told the opening session that understanding of and support for the rights of the Palestinian people were increasing throughout the world, "largely as a result of the Committee's tireless efforts'. These included organization of seminars, meetings with nongovernmental organizations, and information activities, which the Committee had undertaken to increase international awareness of this question.

The Observer from the PalestineLiberation Organization (PLO) read a message from Yassir Arafat, Chairman of the PLO Executive Committee, expressing gratitude to the Committee and the United Nations for the support provided to the Palestinian people in their struggle and reaffirmed the PLO's readiness to co-operate fully with the United Nations.
