Namibia Day observed at two solemn meetings at Headquarters

Two solemn meetings were held on 26 August in New York by the United Nations Council for Namibia in observance of Namibia Day, marking the nineteenth anniversary of the start of the Namibian liberation struggle. Thirty-two speakers called for Namibians to attain self-determination and independence without dealy, and 40 messages of solidarity with the people of Namibia were received from Heads of State and Government and other officials, United Nations agencies, non-governmental organizations and solidarity groups.

The Council is the legal Administering Authority for the Territory until independence.

Secretary-General Javier Perez de Cuellar, in a statement, called on the international community to redouble its efforts to expedite the implementation of the United Nations plan for Namibian independence. The question of Namibia, he said, should be considered as a primary issue on its own right, the solution of which would ease other tensions in the region. As far as the United Nations was concerned, South Africa remained the interlocutor in Namibia.
