Mandate of United Nations force in Golan Heights extended until 31 May 1986

The mandate of the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) was extended by the Security Council on 21 November for the twenty-third time since it was created in 1974. The Force was authorized to remain in place for another period of six months--until 31 May 1986. The Council acted in unanimously adopting resolution 576 (1985). The Force was established to maintain the ceasefire and supervise the area of separation in the Golan Heights area. Its current mandate was due to expire on 30 November.

The Council called on parties concerned to immediately implement resolution 338 (1973). The Secretary-General was asked to submit, at the end of the new mandate period, a report on the developments with regard to the situation and on measures taken to implement that resolution.

[By resolution 338 (1973), the Council had called for a cease-fire in the 1973 hostilities and called on the parties to begin implementing resolution 242 (1967), which sets forth principles for a peaceful settlement in the Middle East. The Council decided further that negotiations should start between the parties concerned under appropriate auspices, aimed at establishing a just and durable peace in the Middle East.]
