Iran-Iraq peace talks continue.

Ways to move forward within the framework of Security Council resolution 598 (1987) in order to achieve a comprehensive and lasting peace between Iran and Iraq have been put forward by Secretary-General Javier Perez de Cuellar through his Personal Representative Jan K. Eliasson during November.

On 27 October, the Security Council had held consultations to review progress in the implementation of resolution 598. In a statement issued after the consultations, Council President L. Yves Fortier of Canada said Council members remained concerned over a lack of tangible progress in achieving full implementation of the resolution and expressed the full support of the Council to the mission of the Personal Representative of the Secretary-General.

Mr. Eliasson visited the two countries between 31 October and 17 November, shuttling between the two capitals in the UN plane. He conferred with Iran President Hashemi Rafsanjani and Iraq President Saddam Hussein, Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Velayati, his Iraqi counterpart, Tariq Aziz, and other senior officials.
