As President of the Australian Branch of the International Law Association it gives me great pleasure to write this foreword for the 25th Volume of the Australian International Law Journal. This volume is a special issue of the Journal to mark the Australian Branch's hosting of the 78th Biennial Conference of the International Law Association. The promotion of scholarship and research, and the dissemination of academic work to the community are central to the goals of the ILA.

The 78th Biennial Conference of the ILA was hosted in Sydney in August 2018. In addition to the ongoing work of the ILA's Committees and Study Groups, the Conference provided an opportunity for a very rich and varied 'parallel program'.
