Draft convention against apartheid in sports submitted to General Assembly for adoption

A draft international convention against apartheid in sports was submitted on 26 August to the General Assembly by an Ad Hoc Committee established in 1976 to formulate the document.

The convention, which would need 27 ratifications before entering into force, would have States parties prohibit entry into their countries of members of teams and individual sportsmen participating or who had participated in sports competitions in South Africa. It would also prohibit entry of representatives of sports bodies or individuals who officially represented a country practising apartheid.

All States parties would prohibit sports contact with a country practising contact with a country practicising apartheid and take appropriate action to ensure that their sports bodies did not have such contact. States parties would further deny visas and entry to representatives of sports bodies, teams and individual sportsmen representing a country practising apartheid.

Other articles in the draft convention would have parties ensure the expulsion of South Africa from all federations in which it still held membership, as well as deny South Africa reinstatement to membership of any federation from which it had been expelled.
