Climate change was the theme of this year's World Environment Day celebrated on 5 June. In a message issued on the Day, Secretary-General Javier Perez de Cuellar said that "decisive precautionary measures are urgently needed", despite uncertainty as to the rate of global warming.

In a ceremony at UN Headquarters in New York, the Earth Prize was presented to: Ted Turner of Turner Broadcasting and owner of Cable News Network (CNN); james P. Grant, Executive Director of the UN Children's Fund; Carlos Salinas de Gortari, President of Mexico; and Gro Harlem Bruntland, Prime Minister of Norway.
