Uzbekistan plans to resume operations of underground gas storage facility on border with Kyrgyzstan

The Uzbek authorities have decided to resume the operation of the Northern Sokh underground gas storage facility, located on the border with Kyrgyzstan, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev announced at a meeting held on February 1 in Andijan, Podrobno.uz reports.

"The underground gas storage in Sokh was closed for some reason. We agreed on this issue with Sadyr Japarov during a state visit to Kyrgyzstan. Our Minister of Energy will travel to Kyrgyzstan and agree on technical issues," Mirziyoyev said.

Head of the Ministry of Energy of Uzbekistan Zhurabek Mirzamakhmudov confirmed this information, adding that the launch of the gas storage facility will improve gas supply to consumers in Ferghana Valley.

"The volume of underground gas storage in northern Sokh is about 2.5-3 billion cubic meters. 1.3 billion cubic meters of gas can be used, the rest remains in the buffer zone. This means that we will be able to supply the valley with 13 million cubic meters of gas every day during the winter season," he explained.
