Sociedad civil urge a estados de la oea promover carta democratica

Representantes de la sociedad civil del continente, tras dos días de encuentros en la Organización de los Estados Americanos (OEA) en Washington, hicieron recomendaciones encaminadas a fortalecer la agenda interamericana, urgiendo que los Estados miembros diseminen y promuevan la Carta Democrática Interamericana a la sociedad civil y a la ciudadanía. Pidieron también que los gobiernos incrementen recursos para que la OEA pueda cumplir con su misión y con sus mandatos.
La Mesa Redonda con la Sociedad Civil fue organizada por el Departamento de Cumbres de las Américas de la OEA, y contó con cuatro sesiones que abordaron, respectivamente, los temas de: Gobernabilidad y Desarrollo en la Sociedad del Conocimiento; Promoción de la Democracia y la Declaración de Florida; Desarrollo Social y Económico y la Declaración y Plan de Acción de Mar del Plata; y Promoción de Derechos Humanos. La Declaración de Florida fue emitida de la última sesión ordinaria de la Asamblea General de la OEA en junio del 2005, mientras que la de Mar del Plata salió de la Cuarta Cumbre de las Américas en Argentina en noviembre pasado.
Entre las recomendaciones sobre desarrollo social y económico, formularon un llamado para que la OEA incluya más consideraciones sobre cultura e identidad en sus programas destinados a la inclusión y protección de las poblaciones vulnerables. Destacaron además que “la situación actual, en un contexto de globalización, de generación de la sociedad del conocimiento y asimetrías en condiciones de competencia con otras regiones, hace necesaria una revisión del modelo de inserción de los países de America Latina y el Caribe”.
