La Secretaría General de la Organización de los Estados Americanos (OEA) presentará un nuevo informe sobre la posible comisión de crímenes de lesa humanidad en Venezuela el miércoles 2 de diciembre a las 9:00 EST (14:00 GMT) mediante videoconferencia en la plataforma Zoom.
El informe, elaborado por el Asesor Especial sobre la Responsabilidad de Proteger de la OEA, Jared Genser, se basa en el informe del Panel de Expertos Independientes de la OEA de 2018, que recopiló una gran cantidad de evidencia con la cual se determinó que había razones para creer que se estaban cometiendo crímenes de lesa humanidad en Venezuela.
Desde entonces, los abusos han continuado y los presuntos delitos se han ampliado en escala y profundidad, afectando a millones de venezolanos. Argentina, Canadá, Colombia, Chile, Paraguay y Perú remitieron la situación a la Corte Penal Internacional (CPI) de conformidad con el artículo 14 del Estatuto de Roma, solicitando a la Fiscalía que abra una investigación sobre la posible comisión de crímenes de lesa humanidad en Venezuela. Asimismo, la conclusión de la Misión de Investigación de las Naciones Unidas en Venezuela fue que las violaciones de derechos "equivalían a crímenes de lesa humanidad". Sin embargo, la Fiscal de la CPI no ha abierto una investigación penal internacional, alentando al régimen a cometer más crímenes, en la creencia de que puede actuar con impunidad total.
