The S ecurity Counci l,
Reca llin g its previ ous resolut ions on Af ghanist an, in p articul ar it s r esolutio n
2489 (201 9) extend ing throu gh 17 Sept ember 202 0 the mand ate of the Un ited Nati ons
Assi stance M ission i n Afghani stan (U NAMA),
Stres sing the import ant role that the Unit ed N ations will con tinue to play in
prom oting peace and stabil ity in Afgha nistan, while also addr essing the challe nges
facin g th e cou ntry and it s peo ple, espec ially con sequence s of the CO VID- 19
pand emic, rec ogni zing that th e impact of the pan demic pr esents a p rofound challen ge
to Af ghanist an’s he alth s ystem, socio -econo mic an d hum anitari an sit uations, and is
wors ening t he food crisis and ac knowled ging th e launc h of th e Globa l Huma nitarian
Resp onse Plan for COVID- 19 by the Unit ed N ations, which put s the peop le at the
cente r of the re sponse, as w ell as recog nizi ng the eff orts a nd mea sures taken by the
Gove rnment of Afghan istan in respons e to CO VID-19,
Reaf firm ing its stro ng comm itment to the s overeign ty, indep endence, terri torial
integ rity and na tional unity of Afg hanista n, as well as i ts con tinued suppor t for the
Gove rnment and peop le of Afg hanista n,
Reco gniz ing th at a sust ainable pea ce can be ach ieved only thr ough a
comp rehensiv e and inclusi ve Af ghan-l ed and A fghan- owned polit ical proce ss that
aims at a perman ent and compreh ensive cease fire as well as a n in clusive poli tical
settl ement to e nd th e con flict in Afgh anistan and reaffi rmin g the importan ce of the
Unit ed Na tions in this regard, as well as welco min g the efforts of all region al an d
inter nationa l partn ers of Afghani stan an d rec ogni zing t he effo rts of the G overnme nt
of A fghanist an a nd of all ot her Afg han a ctors in fa cilitatin g in tra-Af ghan
nego tiati ons,
Call ing for an inclu sive an d meani ngful pe ace pro cess wit h the particip ation of
wome n, youth and eth nic, religi ous and other mi norities an d underl inin g that th e
econ omic, social, politic al and deve lopment gains made in th e last 19 y ears a s well
as respect for h uman r ights, especial ly for women , chil dren an d mino rities , mus t be
prot ected an d built upon,
Reca llin g th e desir e of th e Gover nment a nd the peopl e of Afgh anistan to
rein vigorate their countr y’s sta nding as a platform of internat ional coopera tion, and
in t his reg ard we lco ming th e effor ts of region al and intern ationa l partn ers and
