anniver sary of the United Nati ons
1. We, the Heads of S tate a nd G overnmen t rep resenti ng th e peo ples of th e
worl d, have gathered on 21 Septem ber 2020 at the high-le vel mee ting of the Gen eral
Asse mbly t o comm emorat e the seventy -fifth anniv ersary of th e Unit ed Nat ions. We
do so with a s ense of awe and d eep resp ect for t he foun ders who created this
Organ ization. Ther e is no other global orga nizatio n wit h the legi timacy, conveni ng
powe r a nd normativ e i mpact of the Uni ted Nation s. N o o ther globa l or ganizati on
give s hope to so many p eople f or a b etter world a nd can deliver the f uture w e want .
The urgen cy for all count ries t o com e tog ether, to f ulfil the promis e of the nations
unit ed, has r arely b een grea ter.
2. Born out of t he horro rs of the Second Wor ld War, the U nited N ations, a s a
comm on endeavo ur for humani ty, w as establis hed to save succe eding gene rations
from the scourg e of war. Even in t imes of gr eat g lobal challen ges a nd te nsion, our
Organ ization has c atalysed decolon ization, promote d freedo m, shape d norms fo r
inter nationa l deve lopment and worked to er adicate disea se. The Unite d Nati ons ha s
help ed to m itigate dozens of con flicts, saved h undred s of t housand s of liv es thro ugh
huma nitarian actio n and provide d milli ons of childr en with the e ducatio n that every
child d eserves. I t h as worked to p romote an d p rotect all hu man right s and funda mental
free doms f or al l, inc luding the equal rights of women and men. The Charter of the
