Reca llin g its reso lutions 194 (III) o f 11 De cember 194 8, 21 2 (III) of

19 No vember 194 8, 3 02 (IV) of 8 Decem ber 1949 and all subseq uent related

resol utions, includi ng its re solutio n 71/93 of 6 D ecembe r 2016,

Reca lling al so the r elevant resolut ions of the Secu rity Co uncil,

Havi ng con sidered the rep ort of the C ommissi oner-Ge neral o f the United

Nati ons Re lief a nd Works Agency for P alestin e Refu gees i n the Near East covering

the p eriod f rom 1 Ja nuary to 31 Dece mber 20 16,

Comm ission of the A gency address ed to t he Com missione r-Gene ral,

extr aordinar y meeti ng of th e Commi ssion he ld on 8 Septem ber 201 6,

Unde rlin ing that, at a time o f heigh tened conflict and i nstabili ty in the Mi ddle

East, t he Agency co ntinues t o play a vita l role in amel iorating t he plight o f the

Pale stine refuge es through the pro vision of, inte r a lia, essenti al e ducatio n, health,

relie f and so cial ser vices pr ogramme s and e mergency assista nce to a registe red

popu lation of mor e than 5.3 mil lion re fugees whose situatio n has become extrem ely

prec arious, in mitigati ng the conse quences of alarmin g tre nds, i ncluding incr easing

viol ence, marginal ization and poverty, in t he ar eas of oper ation, and i n pro viding a

cruc ial meas ure of s tabilit y in the region,
