Police Disperse Protesters in Almaty

AKIPRESS.COM - Special police troops reportedly detained protesters near Nur Otan ruling party's office in Almaty, the biggest city in Kazakhstan, RFE/RL reports.

According to Vlast.kz, about 40-50 people participated in the rally, and "most of them were detained.

" According to the report, police started "dispersing the protesters after they started demanding resignation of President Nursultan Nazarbayev." Prosecution representative who arrived on the scene declared the protests illegal.

Astana is hosting today the congress of the Nur Otan party with Nazarbayev in attendance. The congress marks the 20 anniversary of the party.
