El Secretario General de la Organizción de los Estados Americanos (OEA), José Miguel Insulza, y la Directora de la Organización Panamericana de la Salud (OPS), Carissa Etienne, firmaron hoy una declaración conjunta en la que se comprometen a aunar los esfuerzos de ambas instituciones hemisféricas en aras de avanzar hacia la cobertura universal de la salud en las Américas.
El Secretario General Insulza destacó la oportunidad de firmar un acuerdo de este tipo con la OPS en el marco de la Asamblea General de la OEA, cuyo tema central es “Desarrollo con inclusión social”. En el contexto de nuestro hemisferio, la falta de acceso a la cobertura sanitaria “también está relacionada con las desigualdades sociales que existen en nuestras sociedades”.
El Secretario General de la OEA señaló que en todo el territorio de las Américas existen importantes sectores de la población que no cuentan con cobertura de salud. Más allá del debate ideológico, afirmó, es necesario que todos los ciudadanos tengan acceso a una salud de calidad.
La Directora Etienne indicó que la falta de cobertura de salud en importantes sectores de la población de las Américas preocupa a muchos de los países de la región. “El objetivo de este acuerdo es fortalecer la cooperación entre ambas instituciones en el área de la inclusión social”, dijo la Directora de la OPS, y recordó la importancia de este tema en el hemisferio occidental, “la región más desigual del mundo”.
“Para la OPS y la Organización Mundial de la Salud la inclusión social es muy importante, al tiempo que avanzamos en aras de lograr la cobertura de salud universal”, sostuvo la Directora Etienne, quien agregó que “los Estados Miembros han decido que las Américas se conviertan en la primer región del mundo que haya alcanzado la cobertura de salud universal”.
