Oea y honduras amplían acuerdo para cooperar en el marcaje de armas de fuego

La Organización de los Estados Americanos (OEA) y el Gobierno de Honduras firmaron hoy la ampliación del Acuerdo de Cooperación para la ejecución del proyecto Promoviendo el Marcaje de Armas de Fuego en América Latina y el Caribe, que fue rubricado en octubre del año 2011 en el marco de la Convención Interamericana Contra la Fabricación y el Tráfico Ilícito de Armas de Fuego, Municiones, Explosivos y Otros Materiales (CIFTA), que la institución adoptó en 1997.
En la ceremonia, el Secretario General de la OEA, José Miguel Insulza, destacó que “este proyecto tiene por objeto fortalecer la capacidad de verificación de la procedencia de las armas; en la medida que exista una identificación que permita fortalecer la lucha contra el tráfico ilícito, identificar las armas decomisadas y determinar su procedencia, será mucho más fácil combatir este problema”.
Insulza resaltó la importancia del proyecto de marcaje de armas de fuego especialmente para las Américas, continente que tiene el índice de homicidios con armas de fuego más alto del mundo. “Cerca del 80 por ciento de los asesinatos en la región son cometidos con armas de fuego”, señaló.
El máximo representante de la OEA recordó que ya son 25 los países de la región que forman parte del proyecto de marcaje de armas de fuego, y que la enmienda que hoy se firmó en la sede la OEA en Washington, DC, permitirá profundizar la lucha contra el tráfico ilícito de este tipo de armamento.
En 2011 la OEA entregó a Honduras una máquina de marcaje y una computadora, y en virtud de la ampliación ahora firmada se entregarán dos máquinas de marcaje y dos computadoras más, además de proporcionarse el entrenamiento necesario. “De este modo ampliamos nuestra cooperación con las autoridades hondureñas no solamente en el tema del marcaje de las armas, sino también en el tema de las armas de fuego en general, cuyo objetivo principal es la reducción del crimen y la violencia”, indicó.
