Misión de observación electoral a bahamas presenta hallazgos y recomendaciones

La Misión de Observación Electoral de la Organización de los Estados Americanos (MOE/OEA) desplegada en las Bahamas para las elecciones generales de mayo 2017 presentó hoy su informe al Consejo Permanente de la OEA, en el que destacó la apertura y cooperación de autoridades, partidos, grupos cívicos y la gente del país, y presentó recomendaciones para mejorar procesos.
La Jefa de Misión, Ombudsperson de la OEA Sherry Tross, felicitó a las Bahamas “por las medidas que ha tomado para asegurar acceso al voto para los ciudadanos que viven en el exterior y los que no pueden concurrir a su recinto electoral” el día de las elecciones.
La Jefa de Misión anotó que en las reuniones de la Misión con una amplia gama de actores, algunas de las preocupaciones compartidas con la Misión incluían el grado de preparación del Departamento de Registro Parlamentario y nombramiento de un Comisionado Parlamentario apenas días antes de las elecciones, temas que generaron “una sensación palpable de intraquilidad entre los actores del proceso electoral”. Asimismo, destacó la forma “profesional y competente” en que el nuevo Comisionado y el personal del Departamento “aseguraron la realización exitosa de las elecciones”.
Entre sus recomendaciones, la MOE instó a:
· Clarificar quienes pueden participar en la votación anticipada
· Establecer nuevos procedimientos para evitar una transición entre Comisionados Parlamentarios durante el proceso electoral
· Digitalizar procedimientos de registro y avanzar hacía el uso de carnets electorales biométricos
