Ex presidente de costa rica destaca capacidad de la carta democratica para responder a nuevos desafios

El ex Presidente de Costa Rica, Miguel Angel Rodríguez, destacó hoy en la Organización de los Estados Americanos (OEA) la capacidad de la Carta Democrática Interamericana de responder ágilmente a los nuevos retos, afirmando que si la democracia se ve amenazada en el hemisferio, “los gobiernos de nuestros países y la OEA deberán hacer gala de determinación y lucidez para aplicar los principios de la Carta”.
Al hablar en una sesión del Consejo Permanente, el ex mandatario costarricense dijo a los representantes de los Estados miembros que juntos “nuestros países y la OEA deben enfocar sus esfuerzos para elevar el bienestar y combatir la pobreza a través de la cooperación”. Al mismo tiempo que elogió la adopción de la Carta Democrática Interamericana como uno de los pilares de la OEA, dijo que la pobreza que aflige a millones de familias en las Américas “es la causa del así llamado desencanto democrático”.
El Presidente del Consejo Permanente de la OEA, Embajador de Guyana Odeen Ishmael, se refirió a lo que llamó “una clara y significativa relación entre la educación y la democracia”. Dijo que no educar a la ciudadanía sobre sus libertades y no ofrecerles las facilidades para que mejoren su nivel de vida “puede ser prejudicial para nuestras democracias”. El Embajador Ishmael hizo un llamado para que se desarrolle una “cultura democrática que inspire a las nuevas generaciones la defensa de la democracia”.
El Secretario General Adjunto, Luigi Einaudi analizó la evolución de la Carta Democrática, resaltando que la OEA estuvo en el centro de su evolución. Einaudi mencionó que Argentina y Paraguay celebraron elecciones presidenciales el domingo pasado, lo que constituyó un paso más hacia la consolidación de la democracia representativa en las Américas resaltando la contribución de la OEA en ambos casos.
Luego de que la Coordinadora Ejecutiva de la Unidad para la Promoción de la Democracia, (UPD), Elizabeth Spehar, presentara un inventario de actividades realizadas encaminadas hacia la promoción y consolidación de la democracia en el hemisferio, varias delegaciones expresaron sus puntos de vista sobre el particular.
