the Director-General, I have the honor to refer to the letter 932/01
of
16
August
2001
in
which the Permanent Delegation
of
Colombia to UNESCO kindly conveyed your
Government' s offer to host the above-mentioned meeting.
The Director-General has asked me to express his warm thanks to your Government for this offer,
which
is
hereby accepted on behalf
of
the Commission (IOC).
A.
Nature
and
Scope
of
the
Meeting
Its purpose is to evaluate the progress made by the Tsunami Warning System (ITSU) during the
last two years and identify ways and means for further improvement
of
the system in order to organize
effective protection
of
the population and property against tsunamis and to meet the challenges
of
the
next century.
Under the Regulations
for
the general classification
of
the various categories
of
meetings
convened by UNESCO, adopted by the General Conference at its

Session (14C/Resolution 23), the
meeting comes under Category II, Intergovernmental meetings other than international conferences
of
states.
