Uruguay to Legalize Abortion

: The bill passed by the narrowest of margins -- 50 votes for, 49 against. To the positive votes from Frente Amplio was added the vote from deputy Ivan Posada of the Independent Party. All Colorado Party deputies voted against the bill. About 20 Uruguayan women, some of them completely naked, gathered outside the building to show objection to the proposed legalization of abortion. In downtown Montevideo, hundreds of people took to the streets to express their opposition to the controversial bill. Titled "The Antiabortion Movement of Uruguay', the march was organized by several social groups, which aimed to pressure Parliament not to pass the bill.
