The power of information and its pivotal role in the world today--both as an instrument of social, cultural, political and economic changes and as an instrument of peace, democracy and development--were the focus of deliberations of the UN Committee on information at its sixteenth session (9-24 May New York).

Stressing the need to communicate the evolving UN message with clarity and impact, the Assistant Secretary-General for Public Information, Samir Sanbar, told the 83-member Committee that forging strong media partnerships, developing wider key audiences and polishing the tools of programme delivery were at the forefront of his endeavours in fulfilling the mandate of the Department of Public Information (DPI)--the focal point of information activities of the UN.

The Department, he said, "has taken steps to sharpen its message and speak with one voice in presenting a unified United Nations at Headquarters and in the field".
