Secretario general insulza insta a la región a redoblar los esfuerzos por la igualdad de género con motivo del día internacional de la eliminación de la violencia contra la mujer

El Secretario General de la Organización de los Estados Americanos (OEA), José Miguel Insulza, llamó a los países de la región a redoblar los esfuerzos para acabar con la violencia y explotación de género, con motivo de la celebración hoy del Día Internacional de la Eliminación de la Violencia contra la Mujer.
“Pese a los importantes avances registrados, todavía queda mucho por hacer. La vida, la seguridad y la integridad de la mayoría de las mujeres y niñas de las Américas están sistemáticamente amenazadas y en riesgo por la violencia de género, la explotación y la trata”, dijo el Secretario General Insulza.
El máximo representante de la OEA recordó que en las últimas décadas se han dado varios e importantes pasos en la dirección correcta en la región. “Ocho países tienen ahora leyes integrales de protección del derecho de las mujeres a vivir libres de violencia; doce países cuentan con registros de datos sobre las dimensiones de la violencia en la salud, la educación y el trabajo; y trece Estados están elaborando sus presupuestos con partidas específicas orientadas a la erradicación de la violencia contra niñas y mujeres”, destacó.
Con motivo de la conmemoración este año del vigésimo aniversario de la entrada en vigencia de la Convención Interamericana para Prevenir, Sancionar y Erradicar la Violencia contra las Mujeres, conocida como Convención de Belém do Pará, el Secretario General Insulza recordó en su saludo, que la Comisión Interamericana de Mujeres (CIM) de la OEA evaluó los avances y desafíos en la materia en una decena de foros regionales y nacionales, con el objetivo de fortalecer el Mecanismo de Seguimiento (MESECVI) para el análisis del cumplimiento de las obligaciones asumidas por los Estados al ratificar la Convención de Belém do Pará.
