1 | Introduction and Overview
The purpose of this ed itorial is to report on Corpor ate
Governance: An International Review's (CGIR) content and ed-
itorial performance duri ng 2023, that is, its 31st volume since
the establishment of the journal in 1993. It remai ns the mission
of the journal to publish cutting- edge international business re-
search on the phenomen a of comparative corpo rate governance
throughout the global economy with our ultimate goal t o con-
tribute to a rigorous and relevant global theor y of corporate gov-
ernance. Our last year 's performance indicates that this mission
is widely shared within t he corporate governance communit y,
and we are grateful to a ll colleagues who supported the journal
in various roles such as in the editoria l team, as ad hoc review-
ers, submitti ng authors or interested reader s.
Regarding origin al submissions, 2023 was a record year for the
journal with a total of 746 re ceived manuscripts (compared to
633 in 2022 and 536 in 2021). This number even exc eeds our
prior—largely cor ona- driven—ma ximum number of s ubmis-
sions in the year 2020 when we rec eived 688 manuscripts.
Despite this increased load , the global community of corporate
governance scholars supporting t he journal helped sustain the
efficient, timely, and friendly manner of our rev iewing process.
We are grateful to our editors, ed itorial board members, and
reviewers for their excellent serv ice to corporate governance
scholarship. We provide more metrics about key turnaround
times in Section4 of this ed itorial.
Volume 31 contains six issues with 42 original a rticles. Each
issue is led by an “Editor's Pick” art icle—a new category that
had been initiated in volume 29— and highlights ar ticles that
we feel are pertinent to the journal 's aims, that is, to publish
research on corporate governa nce that is rigorously conducted
and relevant to influence the pract ice of corporate governance
throughout the world. The “Editor's Pick” articles of volume 31
are succinctly outlined in Se ction2.
Issue 1 includes also a focused issue of f ive review articles. They
deal with a broad range of intrig uing subjects such as map-
ping the corporate governance s cholarship (Pandey, Andres,
and Kumar2023), remuneration reforms in the ban king sector
(Zalews ka 2023), synthesizing the board- strategy relationship
(Bezemer et al. 2023), a nd sustainable corporate govern ance
(Kavadi s and Thomsen2023) as well as antecedents of top man-
agement team and board gender diversity (Yao2023).
Another focused issue is published in I ssue 5 that is dedicated
to corporate governance mechan isms in light of the COVID- 19
crisis. In an exten sive commentary, Bonacchi et al.(2023) out-
line novel res earch questions and methodolog ical opportunitie s
with regard to governance mecha nisms, accounting regulation,
and corporate disclosure in t he aftermath of COVID- 19. Fabrizi
et al. (2023) provide evidence from the COVID- 19 pandemic
about the infor mativeness of ear nings announcement s.
It is a long CGIR tradition to recogniz e the best papers published
in a particular volume as well a s the most dedicated referees in
a specific year. Sect ion 3 offers details on these awards and the
selection processes behind them. We are indebted to the mem-
bers of our Advisory B oard for their continuous support of the
journal in general and the best paper selection proce ss in partic-
ular. Above all, we are g rateful to all authors for submitting their
academic work to CGIR.
Given our aim to generate and, importantly, dissem inate policy-
and practice- releva nt knowledge that is produced using cutting-
edge research methods and is in formed by sound theory, we are
