Los ensayos de este libro están inspirados por muchas fuentes y reflejan varias conversaciones que he tenido con abogados internacionalistas en el curso de los últimos cuatro años. El iniciador de la idea del libro fue el profesor Sir Elihu Lau-terpacht, que me invitó amablemente para dar las conferencias conmemorativas de Sir Hersch Lauterpacht en la Universidad de Cambridge en 1998, y al respecto señaló que este privilegio implicaba también un compromiso para preparar las conferencias para su publicación. La hospitalidad de Eli en Cambridge en 1997 y las discusiones que tuve con él también son la base de mi interpretación del trabajo de su padre en el capítulo 5. Como siempre, estoy en deuda con el profesor David Kennedy de la Facultad de Derecho de Harvard por las innumerables conversaciones y los proyectos de colaboración, las semanas y fines de semana en Dighton, cortos y largos períodos juntos, con mayor compañía en Boston, Helsinki y otros lugares, en las diferentes etapas de escritura de estos ensayos. Pero la única persona que ha leído todo este trabajo, y cuyos comentarios y críticas están reflejad os en cada página, como en todo en su autor, es Tiina Astola. Este libro no existiría sin ellos.
Muchos otros amigos y colegas han estado involucrados. Los comentarios y el trabajo de la Dra. Outi Korhonen se reflejan en la descripción de la cultura de los internacionalistas de fines del siglo XIX. El informe sobre los abogados internacionalistas y el imperialismo (capítulo 2) se basa en el importante trabajo de los profesores Antony Anghie y Nathaniel Berman, y en discusiones que he tenido con ellos a lo largo de los años.
