[Prólogo] No hay amor, me parece, que nos deba parecer más natural ni que sea más digno de un hombre de bien que aquél que siente por su país. [1] Capítulo I, Que hay un principio de todas las cosas, cuya unidad & bondad son indivisibles. & que cuanto más simple es una cosa, más perfecta ella es.
La diferencia que hay entre todas las cosas que están en el mundo las mantendría en una continua división sin paz posible, sin vínculos ni jerarquía entre ellas, si [2] todas ellas no tuvieran un solo y común principio, en cuya dependencia es donde se da su reunión común. Es absolutamente necesario que, puesto que hay un último, haya un primero. [...] Para ser independiente, es preciso que tenga existencia por sí mismo. Que no haya nada en común con el resto [de cosas] más que su sola presencia, de la cual todas las cosas tienen necesidad. Que fuera [3] tan simple, que no pueda ser comprendido por nuestro entendimiento, ni expresado con pala-bras, al estar por encima de todo lo que se puede decir y pensar. Porque si es susceptible de ser dividido y no fuera absolutamente simple y primero, no puede ser principio, [ya que] lo que no es simple por estar necesitado de cosas de las que componerse y lo que no está en el primer lugar está sometido a todo lo que le precede.
Así, esta naturaleza independiente no puede verse más que como una altura inaccesible, que cuanto más queremos considerar, más fuera de toda medida parece. Hasta aquí tiene alcance la inteligencia del hombre, a saber, que como [4] para representarse alguna cosa inteligible hay que rechazar fuera de nosotros la imagen sensible de la misma cosa, entonces, se forma en nosotros un concepto que está por encima de nuestros sentidos. Así, para hacer cualquier descubrimiento de este principio independiente, hay que considerarlo por encima de toda comprensión y rechazar fuera de nosotros todas las formas...
