La nueva publicación de la OIT, titulada Workplace solutions for childcare1, examina cómo los trabajadores de los países industrializados y en desarrollo se benefician de ciertas medidas de apoyo para el cuidado de sus hijos en los lugares de trabajo. El libro señala que la falta de adecuado cuidado a los niños puede repercutir en la “participación de la mujer en la fuerza laboral y en la igualdad de género, así como en la productividad laboral, en el desarrollo económico, en el desarrollo infantil y en el bienestar de las familias y de la sociedad en su conjunto”.

Este libro examina la atención a la infancia en 10 países, a saber, Francia, Hungría, Reino Unido y Estados Unidos, en el mundo industrializado, y Brasil, Chile, India, Kenya, Sudáfrica y Tailandia, en el mundo en desarrollo. Cada capítulo ofrece una visión general de las políticas y las realidades de la atención a la infancia, así como estudios de caso en los que se presentan ejemplos de iniciativas específicas en lugares de trabajo tan diversos como las plantaciones de Kenya y las empresas dedicadas a las tecnologías de la información en la India.
Revisando los regímenes nacionales de atención a la infancia y presentando ejemplos de programas de esta índole en el lugar de trabajo, esta obra permite avanzar en el conocimiento de por qué y cómo diversas partes interesadas se han unido para desarrollar soluciones encaminadas a ayudar a los trabajadores que tengan la necesidad de cuidar de sus hijos. Aunque el papel del empleador es importante, otros interlocutores como los sindicatos, las ONGs y las organizaciones especializadas en la atención a la infancia, así como diversos órganos de la Administración y los municipios, participan cada vez en mayor medida en los programas relacionados con el cuidado de los niños el lugar de trabajo.
El libro examina también diversas soluciones vinculadas al lugar de trabajo para ayudar a los trabajadores en el cuidado de los niños en edad preescolar, así como antes y después de la escuela y durante las vacaciones, utilizando cuatro categorías principales: servicios ofrecidos por la empresa dentro o fuera de sus instalaciones, asociación con los servicios de la comunidad, ayuda financiera y servicios de asesoramiento y de remisión.
