5. Mobile cranes1
5.1. Outriggers
5.1.1. Where a mobile crane is fitted with outriggers
when in use, the outriggers should be fully extended and locked
in position;
the jacks should be extended sufficiently to take the load fully
off the wheels; and
unless the crane is on firm ground such as concrete, the jacks
should rest upon adequate packing.
5.2. Ballast
5.2.1. In cases in which the amount of ballast fitted to a mobile
crane depends upon the length of the jib, measures should be taken
to ensure that the crane has been properly ballasted before use.
5.3. Jibs or booms of variable length
5.3.1. Tn cases in which a mobile crane is fitted with a jib or
boom of a length that can be varied by the insertion or removal of a
jib or boom section, the following precautions should be taken when
the jib or boom is lowered for its length to be changed:
where necessary, the automatic safe load indicator provided in
accordance with the requirements of section 5.7 should be dis-
connected;
the jib or boom should be lowered along the fore-and-aft axis of
the crane and deposited upon a sufficient number of blocks each
of adequate strength and suitably spaced; and
1The provisions of this chapter, in addition to any applicable provisions of
Chapter 4, apply to all mobile cranes.
