Mandate of UNDOF unanimously extended through November 1987

The Security Council on 29 May extended the mandate of the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) for a six-month period until 30 November 1987. The Council acted in unanimously adopting resolution 596 (1987). It was the twenty-sixth extension since the creation of the Force in 1974.

UNDOF was established to maintain the cease-fire between Israel and the Syrian Arab Republic and to supervise an area of separation between Israeli and Syrian forces in the Golan Heights. It also conducts regular inspections in an area of limited forces and armaments. Its current mandate was due to expire on 31 May 1987. The 1,344-member Force draws troops from Austria, Canada, Finland and Poland.

The Council called on the parties concerned to immediately implement resolution 338 (1973) by which the Council had called for a cease-fire in the 1973 hostilities and asked for implementation of resolution 242 (1967), which sets out principles for a peaceful settlement in the Middle East.
