Japan Center for Economic Research

Japan Center for Economic Research (JCER) is a public interest incorporated association

devoted to research on the Japanese economy. Through quality seminars, symposia and

research, JCER offers to its membership of leading Japanese companies, national and local

governments, think tanks, universities, and economists both up-to-the-minute informa-

tion on Japan and proposals for Japan’s future. Its extensive network linking industries,

governments and universities enables JCER to conduct surveys and research on a broad

spectrum of issues including domestic and foreign economic policies, fi nance, industry

and management.

JCER was established in 1963, and its fi rst president was Jiro Enjoji, a former president

of Nikkei Inc. Later presidents have been prominent Japanese economists including

Saburo Okita, Hisao Kanamori and Yutaka Kosai who con ducted empirical research that

contributed to the development of the Japanese economy in the postwar period.

In addition to its early focus on economic forecasts and research on public policies

in Japan, JCER has also recently been dedicated to international economic research focus-

ing on Asia. In line with this strategy, the “Asia Research Report” and the “China Research

Report” have been pub lished since 1998 and 2000, respectively, and articles in these

reports have also been published in the Nikkei. JCER is also strengthening its collaborative

studies with infl uential research institutes such as Renmin University of China, Tsinghua

University (China), the Shanghai Academy of Social Science (China), the Samsung

Economic Research Institute (Korea) and the Center for Strategic and International

Studies (USA).

Furthermore, JCER established the “Nikkei Asia Scholarship” program jointly with

Nikkei in 2006. JCER invites promising economists from Asian nations to Japan every

year under this program.
