El Secretario General Adjunto de la Organización de los Estados Americanos (OEA), Albert Ramdin, expresó su profunda preocupación por los daños causados por los desastres naturales de las últimas semanas que han constituido un revés para la recuperación económica de Haití. Sin embargo, felicitó al gobierno de ese Estado insular por su determinación de hacer frente a la difícil situación que atraviesa el país luego de los huracanes Fay, Hanna, Gustav e Ike.
Ramdin presentó un detallado informe durante una reunión del Grupo de Amigos de Haití, que tuvo lugar en la sede del organismo hemisférico en Washington, DC, y en la que se analizó la situación de la nación caribeña. Destacó las contribuciones de la comunidad internacional—incluyendo los organismos del sistema interamericano—en la movilización de recursos hacia Haití.
El Secretario General Adjunto celebró la designación del nuevo gabinete, que facilitará la tarea de reconstrucción, la estabilidad política y el desarrollo socioeconómico. Asimismo, felicitó a los representantes de las organizaciones del sistema interamericano por sus reuniones regulares de cooperación que tienen por objeto mejorar la coordinación de los programas.
