Abstract: This work surveys the essential traits of the classic four biggest
schools of Sunni Islam. After an initial analysis of the main Islamic doc-
trines, we proceed to study the fundamental legal criteria that defi ne
Sunni Islam, like sharia or fi qh. The diverse points of view of the sup-
porters of the Freedom of thought are also put in contrast with those of
the traditionalist scholars and, as a conclusion, we advocate to develop
a more contemporary meaning of the notion of legal interpretation as a
necessary tool for modernizing the Islamic legal systems.
