Draft for Disarmament and Development Conference agreed on

A DRAFT FOR a final document describing disarmament and development as two of the most urgent challenges facing the contemporary world has emerged from the final session (21 April-1 May, New York) of the Preparatory Committee for the International Conference on the Relationship between Disarmament and Development. The global meeting is scheduled to be held at Headquarters, from 24 August to 11 September.

In 1984, the General Assembly decided to convene an international conference on disarmament and development (resolution 39/160) to be held in 1986 in Paris. In 1986 the Assembly decided the meeting would take place in New York from 24 August to 11 September 1987.

The conference will review the relationship between disarmament and development in all its aspects and dimensions with a view to reaching appropriate conclusions. It is mandated to examine the implications for the world economy of continuing military expenditures, particularly by nuclear-weapon States and other militarily important States, and to recommend remedial measures. It will also consider ways and means of releasing additional resources, through disarmament measures, for development purposes, particularly in developing countries.
