El Día de las Américas que se celebra hoy 14 de abril, fue el tema central de la sesión Extraordinaria del Consejo Permanente de la Organización de los Estados Americanos (OEA), donde los países miembros resaltaron los fuertes lazos de amistad hemisférica, compañerismo, compromiso con la democracia y decisión conjunta para combatir las amenazas a la seguridad, la pobreza y otros flagelos en la región.
El Presidente del Concejo Permanente, Embajador Miguel Ruiz Cabañas de México, hizo un recorrido por las actividades más importantes del año anterior y declaró que a pesar de los desafíos que se afrontaron, el hemisferio logró avanzar en la agenda de los temas relevantes tales como la promoción y protección de los derechos humanos, seguridad hemisférica, la lucha contra el terrorismo y tráfico de drogas, y además recalcó la importancia de los derechos de los indígenas y la igualdad de género.
Ruiz Cabañas se refirió también a los problemas económicos y sociales que desafían la gobernabilidad democrática en algunos países de la región y observó que el ejercicio de la democracia por si solo no es suficiente. “Importantes disparidades económicas y sociales, y el aumento de la pobreza, exacerbaron la agitación social", aseguró el Embajador.
"El debilitamiento de las instituciones en muchos de nuestros países, son un llamado de atención para empezar un proceso de reformas y fortalecimiento de las mismas", dijo el Embajador Ruiz Cabañas, notando que se acerca la elección de un nuevo Secretario General de la OEA y que esta podría servir como "una oportunidad de reestructurar la organización para que se logre un mejor acercamiento a las necesidades de nuestros tiempos". El Embajador también sugirió que la OEA podría combatir estas disparidades si trabaja en equipo con otras instituciones interamericanas regionales como el Banco Centroamericano por la Integración, el Banco Caribeño de Desarrollo, el Banco Interamericano de Desarrollo, la Corporación Andina de Desarrollo y la Comisión Económica para Latinoamérica y el Caribe de las Naciones Unidas (CELAC).
