Threats to Globalization in the Aftermath of the Crisis
e Bank Negara Ma laysia (BNM), the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and the IMF E conomic Review are inviting
paper submissions for a conference on “reats to Globali zation in the Aermath of the Crisis” to be held at t he Bank
Negara Malaysia in Kua la Lumpur, Ju ly 25–26, 2017.
e conference will seek rese arch on: (i) the recent pas t and medium-term future of international trade ; (ii) the i mpact
of protectionism and nancia l market turbulence on trade; and (iii) the labor market i mpact of both international trade
and migration. We welcome submissions that focus on advance d economies, emerging economies, and Asia-Pacic
economies. We are particula rly interested in papers that address the following topics a nd questions:
• T he global slowdown in trade and finance. What a re the causes of the current trade slowdown? Is there a capital
flow slowdown? Are there large secu lar changes in the composition of capital flows? Has t he relationship between
real synchroniz ation and financial integration cha nged?
• Trade consequences of “secu lar stagnation” and protractedly low external dema nd. Is there a missing generation
of exporters? What are the i mpl ic at ions for selec tion into exporting and medium-run trade dy namics?
Protectionism, i ncome inequality, and globali zation. Does higher inequality lead to more demand for protect ion-
ism? How does higher inequality a ffect international asset markets? Wh at is t he effect of protectionism on global
supply chains? What policies ca n ensure that the gains from globaliz ation are spread more evenly?
• Trade implicat ions of asset market dynamics. What are the i mplic at ions for domestic a nd export market entry of
financia l frictions and shocks? How does international market liquid ity affect goods trade? How do multinational
and trade lin ks affect stock market comovements across countries?
• M igration, remittances and welfare. What is t he i mpac t of immigration on labor markets in recipient countries?
How does emigration affect rem ittances and inequality in orig in countries?

for publication in a special issue of the I MF Economic Review. Please indicate whether you want to contribute to this

Deadline for paper submissions is March 15, 2017 (authors of accepted papers will be i nformed by April 15, 2017).
Preference will be given to submis sions of nished papers. e conference will fund tr avel and local accommodation for
