Committee commends South African National Peace Accord.

The Special Committee against Apartheid on 19 September called the National Peace Accord, which was concluded on 14 September in South Africa, "a significant step" in the search for a negotiated end to apartheid.

The Committee commended the South African Government, the African National Congress of South Africa (ANC) and the Inkatha Freedom Party for their determination to end the political violence in South Africa. The code of behaviour established and the mechanisms created to monitor and curb transgressions were "helpful measures to arrest the recurrence of the debilitating violence in the country".

By the agreement, the signatories had opened the prospect for a climate that fostered "a culture of tolerance conducive to a peaceful process", the Committee said.
