La Comisión Interamericana de Telecomunicaciones (CITEL) de la Organización de los Estados Americanos (OEA) realizó del 17 al 20 de mayo en Santo Domingo (República Dominicana) la “XVII Reunión del Comité Consultivo Permanente II (CCP.II): Radiocomunicaciones Incluyendo Radiodifusión” con el propósito de continuar sirviendo como foro único en la región donde los representantes de gobierno, del sector privado y de la sociedad civil se reúnen periódicamente para examinar conjuntamente los temas que afectan a las telecomunicaciones en las Américas y generar recomendaciones resultantes del consenso entre las partes.
El evento reunió a más de 200 delegados provenientes de 23 países de las Américas, observadores internacionales e invitados locales. El acto de inauguración de la reunión contó con la presencia del Presidente del Consejo Directivo del Instituto Dominicano de Telecomunicaciones (INDOTEL), David Pérez Taveras, quien en nombre del gobierno dominicano dirigió unas palabras a los participantes en la reunión. En la mesa principal estuvieron también presentes los miembros del Consejo Directivo del INDOTEL José Alfredo Rizek y Domingo Tavárez; la Directora Ejecutiva, Joelle Exarhakos; el Presidente Alterno del CCP.II, Franklin Merchán, de Colombia; el Vicepresidente Hector Bude, de Uruguay; y Clovis Baptista, Secretario Ejecutivo de la CITEL.
En la reunión se enfatizó la necesidad de identificar más espectro de frecuencias para destinarlo a los servicios de banda ancha móvil, cuya demanda ha crecido extraordinariamente, así como para los demás servicios que utilizan el mismo espacio en las ondas, como los servicios marítimos, aeronáuticos y de investigación científica, entre otros.
