HUME’S History of England, from the Conquest to the Accession of Henry

VIII., with all that part of the second book of Stephen’s Blackstone which is con-

tained in the rst volume.

Or (Second Period,)

HUME and SMOLETT −From the accession of Henry VIII. to that of Queen

Anne, with the second volume os Stephen’s Blackstone.

The Institutes of JUSTINIAN may be brought up in either case instead of

Blackstone; but in that case it is recommended that Smith upon Contracts be

taken up as well.

For Honours. −Modern History to the year 1789: e. g. both the Portions of the

History of England required of those who seek merely to pass, together with some

additional works.

Thus Candidates for the higher Classes in modern History may be expected to

oer for Examination −

HUME − History of England, from 1066 to the accession of Henry VIII., (or

Lingard).

HALLAM − Middle Ages.

And any three or more of the following works:

(1) GIBBON − Chapters bearing on Modern History, and equalling in extent, 2

vols. 8vo.; especially c. 38. 44. 45. 49. 50. 55. 56. 58. 59. 68. 69. 70.

(2) GUIZOT − History of Civilization in France.

(3) (4) (5) SISMONDI− History of France from Hugh Capet (987) to the death

of Louis XI. (1483); but this may be divided into three periods, each of which

may be taken in separately as one work.

(6) WILLIAM OF MALMESBURY− Gesta Regum Anglorum B. III., IV., V.,

and Historia Novella.
