Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the psychological, social, and educational effects resulting
from the house arrest of Palestinian children in Jerusalem. An intentional random sample,
made up of 10 families from Jerusalem that have had a child under house arrest, was used;
content analysis of interviews with these families was utilized in this study. The results
revealed that the majority of children were apprehended from their homes and that they
were apprehended multiple times up to 13 times in one case. It was also found that most of
the children under house arrest suffer from psychological problems, including fear, anxiety,
despair, tension and nervousness; however,a few of the children reported being less afraid
than their mothers during the arrest. Most parents said that their children have been subjected
to multiple forms of physical and psychological torture in Israeli jails, half of the children had
been given medications for incontinence and nerve medications, even though the majority
of children have not been placed in solitary confinement while in detention. They were all
imprisoned in their own homes except for one child who was imprisoned in his grandmother’s
house. The children faced increased stress after the house arrest and had difficulty sleeping.
The study also showed the negative impact of house arrest on these children’s education.
Half of the children did very badly in their studies, and some even refused to go back to
school. The results also showed some change in their social life. It was found that more
than half of the children do not prefer to go to visit family, and also their relationship with
their friends became weaker after the arrest; it was also revealed that half of the children
prefer to go to their club and others prefer to stay at home and practice a particular hobby.
The study recommends offering special extension programs to the children who experience
or have experienced house arrest, especially through group counseling which aims at
reducing or treating the psychological problems that children with house arrests face such as
aggressiveness, fear, anxiety and introversion.
Key Words: House arrest, children, Jerusalem, Palestine
