The linguistic and epistemological referents of

Palestinian political and media terminology in the

Palestinian-Israeli conict

Abstract

This article examines the linguistic and epistemological referents of

the Palestinian political and media terminology that Palestinians use

to describe and analyze the Palestinian-Israeli conict. These concepts

play an important role in the production of political knowledge

that not only lters the individual and collective consciousness of

the Palestinian receivers, but also employs these concepts as soft

tools that establish the epistemological foundations that frame the

Palestinian struggle against the Israeli occupation. The analytical-

descriptive method was used in order to analyze these concepts and

interpret their epistemological and political referents and employed

a list of literary tropes and gures of speech such as contradiction,

homology, synecdoche, and coincidence as basic yardsticks in the

analysis. The results of this study show that the Palestinian political

and media discourses do not agree on the use of these concepts and

their referents. Moreover, the results show that ofcial Palestinian

discourse, consciously or unconsciously, reproduces the Israeli

narrative in a Palestinian package that consolidates Israeli terms in

the Palestinian narrative and creates epistemological dissonance

among Palestinian receivers. The study recommends unpacking and

deconstructing Palestinian media and political discourse to avoid such

epistemological dissonance. The study also proposes constructing

a terminological database, structured around the occupation as a

concept, making it possible to transcend the Israeli terminology and

ground Palestinian terms and concepts in Palestinian history and

geography.
