The Inclusion of “Child Protection” Concepts at the

Palestinian Universities from the Point of View of the

Representatives of Social Science Program

Abstract

This study aimed to assess the extent to which the concepts related to the eld of child

protection are included the social sciences programs at three Palestinian universities and

the role played by these programs in preparing their students at the level of theoretical

knowledge and skills. The study utilized a qualitative descriptive approach and interviews

were conducted with social sciences department chairs in three Palestinian universities,

including Al-Quds University (central governorate), An-Najah University (northern

governorate), and Bethlehem University (southern governorate), as a representative

sample of nine Universities distributed all over the West Bank.The results indicated that

there is clear disparity among the three program in their focus on theoretical knowledge

and their ability to provide students with theoretical foundations of child protection

and ensuring their familiarity with international conventions related to child protection.

The results also demonstrated the importance these program place on practical training

courses and certain activities that are coordinated in partnership with community

institutions to provide students with the skills they need for their professional careers.

The results also indicated that there is a clear disparity in students’ attitudes and the

ability of these academic programs to provide students with positive and humanistic

attitudes towards the childhood sector as a marginalized sector exposed to all violations

at the political, social and cultural levels, in line with the principles of the ethical charter

of social workers. The study recommended the development of academic programs that

are more specialized and offer in-depth knowledge in the subject of child protection, in

order to contribute more effectively to rening the personality of students and preparing

them to deal with the childhood sector after graduation more professionally. The study

also recommended that establishment of a common intellectual framework among

these programs that encourage collaboration between counselors and social workers,

especially with regard to their academic preparation to deal with child protection

issues in particular, that aim to reduce the relative knowledge and skill disparity among

university graduates from social science disciplines.
